What is Lammas and why it is important for Leading Change
Lammas also known as Lughnasadh (pronounced LOO-nah-sah), is a Celtic festival connected with the Celtic sun god Lugh, master of skills and crafts, especially metalwork, the art behind the tools of harvest: ploughs, scythes, sickles. His festival celebrated human brilliance, vitality, and endurance through feats of strength, horse racing, music, poetry, and ritual. It was a time when contracts were sealed, marriages arranged, and the full flush of summer energy was met with earthy grounding, work and celebration in equal measure.
It was a feminine festival too, celebrating the Goddess of Sovereignty, ‘Mother Earth’. The feminine force who labours ceaselessly to nourish the land. At Lammas, she is honoured as the quiet powerhouse behind fertility, prosperity, and the right order of nature. Her energy does not shine for recognition, but for regeneration. She teaches us that true abundance is not accumulation, it is stewardship. It is how we live in service to what is sacred: land, lineage, purpose, and future.
Thanks for the history lesson Laila - but why is this important in our modern day? Well, we as a modern society are becomming more and more disconnected from so many elements of ourselves and our lives. We are seeing increased polarisation of opinion, increased separation and isolation in our lives, and it is Indigo Brave’s philosophy that we need to do the opposite. We need to CONNECT and RE-CONNECT. Consciously reconnecting to ourselves, our relationships (family, friends, teams) and our environment (nature, land, animals, garden, food and earth) is the BEST MEDICINE to heal this disconnection and start to genuinely experience ourselves as part of this bigger picture.
The ‘wheel of the year’ is an important part of this reconnection. Each turn of the wheel marks a different phase, a moment, a flavour of energy, a piece of the rhythm of our lives, so to notice this and recognise the turning supports us to reconnect with ourselves and feel more energised, present and empowered.
This time of the year is a special moment to begin to ‘gather our harvest in’. We may have worked hard enough to be having a holiday with our loved ones. We may be harvesting time for ourselves or time away from work to reassess our purpose, our vision and mission. It also reminds us that we are all ‘interconnected’, as we cannot harvest alone. Although our modern lives have us believe that we exist in separate family units, it is not the truth. Our harvest, be it food or skills and talents, are never grown in isolation. We depend on and give to all of our communities in many visible and invisible ways. As we witness so much change and exponential shifts across the globe, Lammas is a time to remember that we are not meant to do this life alone.
Carrying the Flame Forward: A Lammas Invitation for Leading Change
In senior leadership environments, we are often trained to focus on what’s next. The next quarter, the next project, the next goal. Success is often only measured and defined by financial targets and output and whilst these measures are essential to be sustainable, other more subtle successes, achievements, accomplishments and wins can go unnoticed. Lammas reminds us to celebrate the harvest of all things, however small. Nature teaches us that every cycle must include a season of harvest and celebration (however brief) or we will not be able to integrate that success sustainably. Without these moments of pause, there is no reflection, and that means there is no true leadership evolution, as we will fall back into the old habits as soon as the stress increases once more (which it will!).
Lammas offers us a strategic reset, a moment to ask ourselves and our teams:
What seeds planted earlier this year are now bearing fruit?
Where has progress occurred, even if quietly?
What invisible labour has enabled visible results?
And how can we develop a culture which genuinely recognises effort, honours contribution, and therefore sustains healthy growth?
As leaders, can we honour the process, the contribution made, and not just the outcome? What are we harvesting, and where / who / how was it made possible? If we can share that story, we can develop our people further.
Re-Connect to Nature as often as possible
Take five minutes outside. Yes, even between board meetings or Zoom calls. Make your catch-ups walking meetings, outside. Stand barefoot if you can. Breathe deeply. Try Forest-bathing. Ground your leadership.
This isn’t about romanticism. It’s about regulation, resonance, and resource.
The earth is your stability and strength.
The sun reflects your visibility and drive.
The rain nourishes your emotional intelligence.
The air is your clarity, your voice, your strategic foresight.
As you connect to these elements, you reconnect to embodied leadership. When you align with them, you lead with presence that builds trust, fosters resilience, and models resilience.
Inner Fire, Outer Change
At Indigo Brave, we recognise that senior executives are often holding enormous complexity: steering business outcomes while navigating personal thresholds; homelife, growing children, wellbeing - mental, emotional and physical and for women the huge threshold of the menopause. And all the time wanting to drive our purpose and develop our careers, our legacy building and systemic change.
We invite you to use Lammas to recalibrate, not push harder, but align energy, your influence, and your intentions more deeply, and joining our Coaching Campfire Circle to support you!
